Q1            What are the perfect kitchen sinkcombinations?

A1            Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now

Depend on space and affordability, there can be different combinations. From my
experience I conclude qualitystainless steel sinks are the best. There can be a
sink exclusively in kitchenand another one or two in work area. Kitchen sink is
only for use duringcooking related usage. A filter can be provided to the
tap/water outlet in thekitchen sink.

A sink withextension platform for keeping vessels cleaned for draining
remaining waterdrops from them is suitable in work area. A second sink for
washing oilyvessels is most ideal.

The following additions are good.1. A good shelf for keeping cleaning items
which can be closed after use . 2.Toilet soap for hand washing and a towel to
dry the wet hand. 3. A waste box tokeep the waste items during cleaning. 4.A
filter cup can be placed replacingsink cap so that in the drain only cleaning
water goes to outside sock pit or drain. Allother items remain in sink which
has to be transferred to waste box and sinkhas to be cleaned inside. This
filter cup fitting to sink is available inChennai metal shops. If possible
gloves can be used during cleaning of oilyvessels.

If space is there,a stand can be provided for drying washed vessels. The
outside of the metalsink has to be cleaned at-leastonce in a fortnight.

The above are toldwith respect to Chennai, India conditions.

Q2            Is it a good idea to build aconventional house using steel frames
instead of bricks and concrete in AndhraPradesh, India?

A2            Gopalkrishna Vishwanath A formerstructural engineer experienced
in Design of steel structures. Sat

I was asked thisquestion in a private message. This was my answer.

I don’t recommendusing steel for building homes in India.

Steel is expensivein India. While in the West labor is expensive compared to
material costs, theposition is the reverse in India.

You can use steel only for the beams and columns of thehouse.

Floor slabs, roofslabs , walls, and foundations have still to be of
concrete/bricks.

So most of yourconstruction material will be material that is not steel.Steel
constructionneeds precise fabrication and drilling of bolt holes for connection
of thebeams at precise places and this needs specialized agencies experienced
insteel construction and they are all busy working to build factory buildings
orequipment structures for big contractors. None of them will come forward
towork on your house. It will be too small a project for them.

Steel gets hot in summer and temperatures are very highin AP during summer. You
need an experienced engineerto see that suitable expansion joint provisions are
made for expansion or elseyou may see cracks.Steelis susceptible to corrosion.

The only steel thatis commonly used in house construction is reinforcement
steel that is embeddedin concrete. You can consider using steel for door and
window frames and panelsbut they will never match the aesthetics of wood.

I suggest you dropthis idea of using steel to build your house. Steel is used
in Industrialbuildings where loads are very heavy and not sustainable by
concrete columns.Steel is over 100 times as strong as concrete and it is used
only becauseconcrete will not be able to bear the loads encountered in
Industrialbuildings.

Your house is aminor structure. Concrete, Bricks, and Wood are the best
materials to buildhouses in India.

My note- Kitchen platform and work area platform has to be made with RCC slab
below the graniteplatform. Aluminium pipes are tried in Kerala for window and
other railings, but they get rusted after a few years. Steel coated  GI pipesare
commonly used in many areas in Kerala.

Q3            What is the future of the laundryservice market in India?

A3            Prasanna Bhalerao M. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune6h

I have been usinglaundry services for years, maybe 40+ years. I use their
services mostly for ironing clothes andvery occasionally for dry cleaning.
Earlier, my father used to giveclothes for ironing and occasional cleaning. He
used to work in the limestonemines and his clothes used to get really dirty.
There were no washing machineback then (70s, 80s, early 90s) and hand wash
couldn't cope.

There was atemporary blimp during COVID period but we have started back to use
theservices. I don't see the service in India suffering a setback.

My note- Many  busy use laundry service  for better cleaning andpressing.

Q4            Why are the Northeastern states ofIndia called "Seven Sisters"
when there are 8 states?

A4            Goutamkumar Oinam  Knows Manipuri May 29

This question is frequentlyasked by many geography students of India because of
confusion due to the lackof proper information.

North East India has 8 states but the region is mainlycalled 7 sisters.

All the North EastIndian states except Sikkim were geographically
interconnected through lands. It's only Sikkim that'sgeographically isolated.

So, theinterconnected 7 states of Northeast are called “7 sisters” and to
console thegeographically isolatedSikkim, it's referred to as “The Brother of
the 7 sisters”.

So, Sikkim is not asister but a brother. 😃Andby saying the term “Seven
Sisters”, Sikkim is excluded from the region.

Q5            Why is felt a good insulator? Isthere any other insulator that is
better?

A5            Paul Camp, Ph. D. in theoreticalphysics and 30 years experience
Answered Feb 4, 2017

Felt traps air. It is the air that is the actualthermal insulator. In homes, it
has been superseded by fiberglass, which is better at the same thing and doesn’t
degrade over time.

Vacuum is the best insulator,at least as far as conduction goes. It isn’t
practical in walls and ceilings sotrapped air insulators are used there. But it
is great in coffee cups andchemistry dewars.

Q6            If it takes 12 hours to digest food, how come eating certain foods
can cause an immediate bowel response?

Q7            What is the use of a two-way switchin household wiring?

A7            Glenn Killam , former You Name It Answered3h ago

A two-way switch is a simple off-on.It is the most-used type of switch.
However, a three-way switch allows controlof a single fixture from two
locations and a four-way allows three locations.

2nd answer- Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now

I could not controlmy smile on reading Mr Glenn’s CORRECT answer. Yes . All
switches are two way switches. Thereare three way or either way switches which
are most commonly used in staircase wiring. A lightin the stair case can be
switched ON or OFF either from the top of staircase orbottom of stair case.

Nowadays three way switches are used to light a lamp in theentrance of homes.
In the night the light can beswitched ON or OFF either from inside or outside
of home. If one family hadgone outside for a trip in day time switching OFF
from inside home and returnin night, the light can be switched ON from outside.

Some installs  sumpmotor switch, operating from inside and outsidehome, so that
when family is away servant or gardener can switch ON and OFF themotor for
watering garden plants.
