Q1 Can yougive some information on  sageApasthambha and sage Bodhayana?:

A1Apasthambha, a native of Andhra, belonged to Krishnayajurveda School.  He
belonged to fifth century BC.  Apasthambha’s teachings are called
Apasthambhasutraor Apasthambhasmriti.

Baudhayana:(Bodhayana)-Baudhayana also belonged to Krishnayajurveda School and
was aninhabitant of Andhra region. Baudhayana’s teachings are called
Baudhayanasutraor Baudhayanasmriti.

Q2. Most of uswould have listened sasthrikal telling- Bodhyanama ellam thaniyae
vango duringupakarma time . We know the Bhodhayana sutra has more manthras
deviating fromAapasthamba sutra . Can you enlighten more about Aapasthamba and
Bodhayana?

A2Apastamba and BodhAyana are the two prominent SUtras of those who are born
inthe family of KRISHNA YAJURVEDIS.

TheSUtras are named after the great Rishis Apastamba and BodhAyana.

Thoughboth SUtras follow KrishNa Yajurveda texts, the two GRIHYA SUTRAS ARE
DIFFERENT in prayoga in certain respects.

As theSUTRA IS DETERMINED BY BIRTH, one has to follow the SUtra belonging to
hisfamily while performing the various Vedickarmas.it is generally held by
traditional and modern scholars that the sUtraliterature is of greater
antiquity and therefore of greater authority. Whilethe smritis are there to
clarify the often cryptic sUtras, it is to the sUtrasthat we must turn to find
the original rules which govern our religiouspractices today.

Q3 Can youtell the puilosophy of Vishnu Purana?

A3 Thepurana has the same philosophy as in Upanishads. Vishnu here is none
other than Para Brahman. It is clearly said thatthe appearance of the world as
a separate entity (separated from Him) is anILLUSION (Vishnu purana.1.2-6).

Brahma,Vishnu and Maheswara are the three aspects of the same Para Brahman (SEE
VISHNUPURANA-1.2.56, 1.2.66, 1.4.15,1.9.56). The world evolves out of the
original and absolute cause – Vishnu(1.1.31) or Krishna (4.12.4) through His
power, Prakrithi. Infinite Jeevas, which are the reflections of the one Vishnu
are seen due to Avidya.

Letus now see some of the slokas to illustrate the point made.

JNAANASWAROOPAMATHYANTHA

NIRMALAMPARAMAARTHATHAHA

THAMEVAARTHASWAROOPENA

BHRAANTHIDARSHANATHAHASTHITHAM

(Inreality, Vishnu is jnaanaswaroopa and pure, But because of ignorance,
heappears in the shape of several things) – V.P.1.2.6.

SRISHTISTHITHYANTHAKARANEEMBRAHMAVISHNUSHIVAATHMIKAAM

SASAJNAAM YAATHI BHAGAVAAN

EKAEVA JANAARDHANAHA (V.P.1.2.66)

(In orderto handle creation, sustenance and destruction the one and only
Janaardhanatakes the names of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara)

YATKINCHINMANASAAGRAAHYAM

YADGRAAHYAMCHAKSHURAADIBHIHI

BUDDHYAACHAYATPARICHCHEDYAM

THADROOPAMAKHILAMTHAVA (V.P.1.4.19)

(Whatever the mind can understand, whateverthe eyes and other organs can
comprehend, whatever the brain can decide- they are all your forms only).

PARAMAARTHASTVAMEVYKO

NAANYOSTHIJAGATHAHAPATHE

THAVYSHAMAHIMAAYENA

VYAAPTHAMETHACHCHARAACHARAM(1.4.38)

(OhMaster, you are the only truth. there is nothing other than you. Because
ofyour power, this world is seen)

YADETHADDRISHYATHE MOORTHAMETHAD

JNAANAATMANASTHAVABHRANTHI JNAANENA

PASHYANTHIJAGADROOPAMAYOGINAHA.

(V.P.1.4.39)

(Thisworld as we see is your own forms. Those who are incompetent see it as
adifferent thing because of their ignorance.)

SHAKTHAYOYASYA DEVASYA

BRAHMAVISHNU SHIVAATMIKAAHA

BHAVANTHYABHOOTHAPOORVASYA

THADVISHNOHPARAMAM PADAM (V.P.1.9.56)

(Thedeity who has all the powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva is the seat of
ParaBrahman)

Thereare several other such slokas to prove the Vedic assertion, “ ekam sat,
viprahabahudaa vadanthi”.

Thefollowing are just a few examples of the common words in the sahasra naamas
ofshiva and vishnu.

1.bhootabhaavana,2. pavitram,3. mahaan,4. niyama,5.sahasraaksha,

6.soma,7. soorya,8. anagha,9.  mahaatapaa,10.pramaaNam,

11.yOgi,12.sarvajna,13.animisha.14.kaama,15.dhanvee,wecan go on like this
further too.---enough to indicate the commonality.

Q5 Does  Vishnu is an Aditya? Where do we have Vishnusahasra namam?

A5  Vedas mention 33 dieties- eight vasus, elevenRudras, twelve Adityas, Indra
and Prajapathi. Allthese came from Hiranyagarbha. Adithi,Ushas and a few other
female deities also find a place. Surprisingly, anger, belief and such other
feelings and even a grinding stone are deified.

Thetwelve Adityas include Mitra, Savitr, Aryaman, Daksha, Bhaga, Amsha,
Twashtra,Pooshan, Shaktra, Vyvaswatha and VISHNU.

Theseare the 12 spokes of the wheel of time
ThusVishnu was a minor deity representing one aspect of SUN. By about
secondcentury BC, Narayana of the Dravidic origin got added to Vishnu.
Almostat the same time, the name Krishna was also added to this. The devotees
of thisdeity were called Bhagavathas or vaishnavas. By 6th century, a few
Vaishnavascriptures including Bhagavathapurana came into existence. By about
12thcentury this started growing fast and by 17th century, it reached its
climax.

Vishnuliterally means one who pervades everywhere. He is predominantly satvik
and is responsible for preservation. To protect Dharma and topunish Adharma, he
takes incarnations- -Matsya (fish), Koorma (tortoise),Varaha (pig), Nrsimha
(man lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, sree Rama, sree Krishna and finally
Kalki (yet tocome).

Some peopleadd Balarama also to this list.  It may be observed that this
tallies with the Darwinian theoryof evolution.

Thethousand names of Vishnu are found in Padma purana, but the one found in
theAnushasana parva of Mahabharatha is more popular.

SreeShankara says, " Vishnu sahasranama is easy to practice, yields
happinessand several benefits.

(SAKALAPURUSHARTA SADHANAM, SUKHA SAMPADYAM, ALPA PRAYASAM, ANALPA PHALAM.). He
alsosays that the sahasranama should be sung along with Bhagavad-Gita (GEYAM
GEETANAMA SAHASRAM).

Inorder to impress that God is one, this sahasranama contains names of
Shiva,Skanda, Ganesha, Soorya, Agni etc., Not only these, but
evenRishabha,Vardhamana etc. are also mentioned.

Somefifteen great teachers have written explanatory notes (Bhashyas).

Ramanujacharyasays that the names represent different aspects of Almighty and
that  there is connectivity and continuity in themeanings. Madhvacharya asserts
that Mahabharatha represents the essence of allshastras and Bhagavad-Gita and
Vishnu sahasranama are the essence ofMahabharatha.

Q6 Can yougive some information about Soundarya lahari?

A6 Thelarge parts of India also celebrate Vijayadasami as the culmination of
ninedays of Duragapuja !... For extolling Sakthi there is nothing more
exhilarating than reading SankaracharyasSaundaryalahari !!. Every sloka of
Saundaryalahari is a mantra with its ownYantra ! ..

It is a poem displaying the finest touchesPoetry extremely pleasing to read.
But knowing its antecedents this aspect isof least concern to the most. The
most ardently felt thought about "Saundaryalahari " is it is Stotra . It is a
stotra in praise of GoddessTripura sundari

For the practitioners of Saundaryalahari , itis a series of Mantras to be used
by upasakas along with Yantras where in theGoddess is to be conceived as
residing.

From the point of view of Vedantins , it isalso an exposition of the Agama or
and Tantras bearing on the worship of theSupreme being in its aspect of Sakti ,
known as Srividjya .

Thereare several legends about this work One legend says that, once Adi
Shankaravisited      Kailash to worship ShivaandParvathi . There, the Lord gave
him a manuscript containing 100 verses whichdescribed the many facets of the
Goddess, as a gift to him.

WhileShankara was returning after visiting Kailash, Nandi stopped him on the
way. Hesnatched the manuscript from him, tore it into two, took one part and
gave theother to Shankara. Shankara, desolate, ran to Shiva and narrated the
incidentto him. Shiva, smiling, commanded him to retain the 41 verses with him
as theinitial part of the 100 verses and then, write an extra 59 verses in
praise ofthe Goddess himself.

Thus, verses 1 - 41 are the original work of Lord Shiva, shedding great light on
theancient rituals of Tantra , Yantra and various powerful Mantras . The
remainingverses, i.e. 42-100 are composed by Adi Shankara himself, which mainly
focuseson the appearance of the Sakti.

Avery good exposition on Saundaryalahari is a book published by
TheosophicalPublishing House, Adayar , Madras ( 1937) authored by Pandit
Subramanya Sastriand Srinivasaiyyengar
