Today I ran through the iyer a great doubt for older people why
(especially our common 2 people fond of Quora as raised only in quora),
daughter in law is called by Tamils as MATTUP P[ENN. sON IN LAW IS CALLED
MAPLE. bUT NO ONE HAS DOUBT. hERE THE GREAT MAN GOT THE DOUBT BECAUSE HE
KNEW THE ONE WORD IN tAMIL WHERE MADU IS COW. hENCE THE DOUBT.!!
2 As usual one quora answered it as Matrup penn =alternate to daughter.
Another said as she in those days came with MADU the cow, to in law home,
she was called so.
3 But the right attitude was seen from Tamil word interpretations as " The
real meaning is as follows. The word ‘Madu’ in Tamil not only means cow,
but also means wealth (Tamil: selvam). Tamil grammar joins the two word
like this - Madu + pen = mattupen (punarchi vithi - tamil:புணர்ச்சி விதி).
‘Mattupen’ means - செல்வம் + ஐ + கொண்டு + வருகிற + பெண் (The girl who
brings wealth) which is ‘urubum payanum udan thokka thogai (உருபும் பயனும்
உடன் தொக்க தொகை)’ according to Tamil grammar. Tamils believe that their
daughter-in-law brings all wealth to their home. You might have heard this
sentence in everyday conversation “எல்லாம் என் மருமகள் வந்த நேரம்" which
means “All the goods happened because of having daughter-in-law”. So, that
is the real reason for calling my daughter-in-law as ‘mattupen’ in Tamil.
{KR Perfect fixation: as daughter in law is correct; but matru means in
exchange which goes to show that one father and mother give up their
daughter and bring in another daughter, in exchange for; and suppose that
parent does not have any daughter; then there won't be any exchange at all.
And Marumagal means something relevant and matrup penn may not.,though
looks obvious.
4 Tirukkural I would like to quote as relevant to the subject: குறள்
400 <https://www.ytamizh.com/thirukural/kural-400/>:

கேடில் விழுச்செல்வம் கல்வி யொருவற்கு
மாடல்ல மற்றை யவை.
மு.வரதராசன் விளக்கம்:

ஒருவனுக்கு அழிவு இல்லாத சிறந்த செல்வம் கல்வியே ஆகும், கல்வியைத் தவிர மற்றப்
பொருள்கள் (அத்தகைய சிறப்புடைய) செல்வம் அல்ல.

English Couplet 400:

Learning is excellence of wealth that none destroy;
To man nought else affords reality of joy.

Couplet Explanation:

Learning is the true imperishable riches; all other things are not riches.

Transliteration(Tamil to English):

kaetil vizhuchchelvam kalvi yoruvaRku
maadalla matrai yavai

5 Madu is used in Kural meaning selvam wealth. So one who comes in
with wealth is mahalakshmi and madu+penn= mattuppenn. seems perfect. KR IRS
