Ramayana isrich with beautiful descriptions of different elements of
nature, life inforests, animal characters, trees, plants, river, mountains,
etc. reflectingthe integral relationship of humanity with environment. There
was ampleexamples and references in the talk. As we read through the stories
inRamayana, we get to know love for nature, animals, plants and vegetation
andalso get an inherent message about the need to preserve it all.

In that context, the reference to thevery origin of the writing of
the epic Ramayana, which points towards thecompassion that Sage Valmiki had
towards nature, is very relevant. Valmiki’sfirst utterance to a hunter and the
shlokas which followed, trying to stop ahunter from killing one of the Krauncha
birds, showsthe agony that he had undergone on seeing the cruelty inflicted.
The first wordhe uttered – “Manishada” – literally means“Abstain, wild man”.
The legend is that till he uttered the versus, that camefrom within, expressing
his anguish, Valmiki himself was oblivious of hiscapability to write shlokas.
It was after having heard his first shloka thatBrahma asked him to write the
great epic, known as Valmiki Ramayanam. So onecan say that the birth of the
epic itself stemmed from a statement ofcompassion for nature.

Most of the incidents inRamayana is set in forests and therefore, it is
lavish with descriptions ofdifferent types of forests – Alpine, deciduous,
tropical, semi tropical, rainforests, evergreen forests and so on. The lives of
the characters in Ramayanaare intertwined with life in different Ashrams where
hermits,Gandharvas, Apsaras, Devtas as well as the tribals co-exist, as a
result ofwhich the ecology of these places find special mention in the stories.

Thedescriptions of the ecology and habitats inside religious retreats
like Panchavati, hermitagesof Sabari, Bhardwajamuni, Agasthyamuni – allideally
help the reader to visualise the beauty of these places, thetranquillity,
sweetness, the chirping of birds, and also the existence of wildanimals.
These hermitages are all located near riverswhich then had unpolluted water
full of natural elements and minerals, and alsoavailability of pure fresh
fruits from the trees, the fresh and pure air, medicinal plants and roots. All
these lead us to appreciate the quality of lifethey all would have had those
days and how healthy life would have been.

A vast treasure of medicinal herbs were available and known
–particularly we are all aware of the story of how Lord Hanuman set off toget
Mrithasanjeevani from the Dronagirimountains in Himalayas and that since he
could not identify the plant, hebrought the whole mountain to the battlefield.
It is the medicine prepared fromthe magical herb Mrithasanjeevani that revived
Lakshmanawho was nearly killed by Ravana’s son Indrajit.

While on this, all of us remembered the news itemthat we read in the newspapers
about a plant called “RodiolaRosea”, a plant found in Ladakh, locally knownas
“Solo”, which as per scientists could bethe mythical herb Mrithasanjeevani.
This plant is supposed to have vast medicinal properties and helps inkeeping
the immune system strong in high altitude areas where oxygen is muchlesser.
Isn’t it great to note that even in those pre historic times areference of such
herbs is made in an epic of ours.

Another interesting aspect was the divinity showeredon Natural
resources like rivers – Ganga, Yamuna, Alakananda andSarayu to name a few – and
mountains were all treated and givenrespect in those days, in contrast to how
we treat them in the present day- asa place for conquering or dumping waste.
Also there are some interestinginstances like – the Mainakam mountain telling
Hanumanthat he can sit and rest on him during his search for Sita; theOcean
saying that his son Viswakarma can build a bridgeacross the ocean. Being
someone who loves nature, I could imagine those visualtreats – as though many
of these narrations in Ramayana lead us to think that nature is in conversation
with men, animals and plants.

Ramayana stories are full of animals and birds as characters –
greatbirds Jatayu and Sampati; the Vanaras (monkeys) Hanuman, Bali,Sugriva,
Angada, Nala and Nila; the bear king, Jambavan, and eventhe squirrels who
helped in building the Ram Sethu. Allthese lead us to believe that the
characters of Ramayana –even the evilcharacters – lived in good harmony with
the environment and knew the importanceof conservation of nature and its
resources. Sita’s attraction to Mareecha, thegolden deer – though treacherously
disguised – plays a pivotal role in thewhole story of Ramayana. Each of these
animals and birds are strong charactersin the Ramayana stories.D

Maybe we should share thesethoughts with our future generation.  I am
not sure whether the media/internet from which the cominggeneration get
information about our epics, will present them with such detailsor permit them
to pause and devour such thoughts. Incidentally, the photographsdepicted above
and a whole lot of them are already there on the internet, fromwhere I have
taken them.  But then, in the normal course even we don’t gothrough these,
except when we come across such topics. (The talk was by Shri ASreevalsan, who
was earlier the Chairman of the Paristhithi SamrakshanaSamithy, Kozhikode)

Thegigantic vacuum of the universe is simply gigantic consciousness,
creatingobjects of awareness. You are an extension of that abstract
consciousness orvacuum, striving for awareness in your voyages in many, many
lives, life afterlife. The basic subject matter of Quantum Physics is quantum
Consciousness. Thesub atomic particles become sprouts of consciousness.
Throughout your life you traversefrom one awareness to another, as part of the
vacuum, the notice ofconsciousness happening in your mini life. When you pay
attention to what youreally are, you end up with the abstract and formless
director as you.

Andas an extension of the great vacuum, you can direct events, by directed
notice. The notice is not merely mental notice, but total notice, creating
hormonalflows and making every cell of you, team up. The only point is, that
youreffort must be symbiotic, synchronizing with the symbiosis of nature.

Canyou compete with a five month old baby, in continuously kicking with legs?
Yousimply cannot. That is how we learnt to stand and walk and run and do all
sortsof feats, attempting without any thought of failure. The tiny baby is
inductingthe whole nature to its help in its attempt, without any doubts about
results.Nature has been helping it automatically. Nature is always there to
help, provided you do not wound and kill nature.

Ourproblem is we are in the quagmire of antibiosis, where we do not allow
thespontaneous flow of reinforcement from nature. We allow doubts and
apprehensions,to become the monsters that make us abort.

Oncewe all believed that the God above is watching. If you identify God as
nature, then God is not only watching but also directing, as you simply
cannotdisconnect from nature. When you synchronize with nature, you will be
always happy.Suffering happens only when you go against nature, and destroy
nature callingit economic activity. You cannot have a living and guiding forest
when youdestroy the forest and change it into furniture.

NoUniversity in the world trains the students in symbiotic living and
perceiving. It is putting them under the thralls of machines and training them
in themechanization of everything, mechanization where there can be no
feelings,emotions,the basic ingredients of understanding.
