Q1      Whatdid you learn "the hard way"?

A1      VijayaLakshmi, Have experience in life for 68 years. Updated 5y

The value of money!

That was early 1970. We had been to Tirupati with our toddler
daughter.Thosewere the days when there were no ATMs, no online railway
reservations.

So we had to carry all the cash for expenditureduring our tour and for return
railway fare.

Return reservation depended on the luck of thepeople.

At Tirupati after darshan (view of holy idol) we hadspent money on shopping.
They were mostly toys for our daughter, which were notavailable in Nagpur.

There was no time to count the cash in hand or estimatenext expenditure.

Everything was done in haste.Luckily we could get areturn reservation.

We found timeto count cash in hand only after we sat in the train.

As we counted the cash, our hearts started thumpingfast. There was very less
cash in husband’s wallet!

The cash was not enough for having one breakfast andtwo meals in the train.

“We will eat Tirupati laddu(A sweet offered to God) asbreakfast and skip night
meals. The cash is enough for our lunch” we decided.

Luckily for the toddler, we had tinned baby food.

In the evening when everybody was having their dinnerour stomachs startedmaking
weird sounds.

“I think youhave some coins in your hand bag. Let us count them. We may at
least have asmall snack” husband said.

I started to remove coins(change) from my hand bag.Thehand bag had at least
five to six pockets.I removed whatever coins were lyingthere in those
pockets. There were coins of five paise(it had some value thosedays) to one
rupee.

After removing them all, there was a small heap ofcoins on the seat.We counted
them patiently. To our surprise the money was more than enough for twomeals!

“God! this isthe power of spare change(chillara mahatyam-in Telugu)” I said
happily.

And priorto this counting, I was constantly complaining about the weight of the
bag!

Not only meals, we had some ice cream too!

That day we learned two lessons. While in a new placewe should constantly watch
our expenditure.

Second lesson was, though very low in denomination, chump change when kept
carefully will be your life saver some time!

So don’t look down upon small coins. Respect money.

Two boys were selling fish in the marketplace. The business was very dull.

At last, a customer came. He went to the first boyand enquired the price of the
fish.

“It’s 100 rupees per kilo, Sir,” said the boy.

The customer just glanced at the second boy andrealized that he was also
selling the same variety of fish. Hoping to get abetter bargain from him, he
moved on to him and enquired his price.

Without any hesitation the second boy said, “It’s just 500 rupees per kilo.”

“ What ! 500rupees per kilo ! You are demanding 5 times the price of what the
other fellowis demanding, and that too for the same kind of fish. It’s
atrocious !”

“ No, it’s notthe same kind of fish. It might appear so, but it is a special
kind of fish.”

“What’s sospecial about it?”, the customer became curious.

“ It’s an intelligent fish and makes one who eats it regularly
intelligent, too. That’s why it’s costlier than the other fish.”

“ I see, thenit’s worth buying. Let me try it.”

He bought a kilo of the fish, paying the hefty price of 500 rupees. Hebought
the fish regularly for the next six days at that exorbitant price with thefond
hope of improving his intelligence.

Did it improves his intelligence ? Unfortunately, no.

At the end of the week, he realized that he had beentaken for a ride by that
smart alec fish-monger.

Furious at being cheated like that, he wanted tosettle scores with that fellow.

The next day, he went straight to that boy anddemanded to know whether he still
sold that “"intelligent fish” ?

“Of course, yes,” replied that unsuspecting guy.

“You bloody liar. Your “intelligent fish” is a bighoax. I have been eating it
for the past 7 days, but not a speck of improvementin my intelligence. You have
cheated me. Return my money, or else I’ll call thepolice now.”

Without batting an eyelid, the young rogue said,”Look, when I said it is an
“intelligent fish”, a week ago, youdidn't object to it. Now, within a week, you
have become intelligent enough tofind out that it can’t be an intelligent fish.
Very good improvement.Isn’t it? Keep taking more of it, and you’ll become even
more intelligent!”

Mynote- I know it is same wine in new bottle. It is only the Iyer and British

We all encounter these situations in our daily life, let's see who relates the
most.

Finding cornerof a tape.

Mixing hot andcold water in desired proportion during  winters. “Ifeel like
scientist already.”

Tearing a paper.

“Can't eventear a paper properly for writing leave application, 75%

Using quora for'only' 5 minutes.

Me: (After breakfast) I'll use quora only for 5minutes, then study.

Q4      Whatare some things most people don't know about the human body?

A4      TinyNair, Cardiologist at PRS Hospital, Trivandrum2y

The Case

He presentedwith complaints of breathlessness on climbing stairs, the ECG
showed significant changes. Wemade a provisional diagnosis of Heart disease and
planned to have full workupincluding an angiogram. His blood test showed severe
anaemia, hemoglobin of 5 gm%. (normalhemoglobin is 15 gm%). All he had was a
bleeding peptic ulcer, which wastreated. His anemia was corrected, ECG changes
normalized. No Heart disease.

He thanked and left.

The fault lies with the world’s worst bonded laborer.

Right after she spends her short childhood playingand nudging with her friends
and neighbors; she is pushed out into mainstreamfor heavy manual labor.
Rightfrom day 1 of her appointment, she is assigned to carry heavy weight;
20times more than her own weight (imagine for a moment, you carrying 1000 Kgs
onyour head); ordered to move at a speed of 6 km / hour. She has to dump
andreload every 60 seconds passing from broad boulevard to narrow streets
andnear-blind alleys. Turnaround time of around 60 seconds.

‘She’ is the RBC (Red Blood Cell).

Nick yourself during your morning shave, or cut yourfinger instead of the
onion, and, ouch, you see crimson red blood flowing out. Your body is a
5-literwater-bottle; but unlike the water in the bottle, this red liquid keeps
youalive. This precious, ‘thicker than water’ gets its color from the
redpigment called ‘hemoglobin’, packed inside RBCs (Red Blood Cells);
Actually, the RBC under the microscope is so cute that, given the chance, I
would’ve named her RRH(Red-Riding-Hood).

She is such a soft-hearted philanthropist, lendingOxygen to those who need it
(tissue and muscles); borrowing from those who haveplenty (lungs) that would
make ‘Robin Hood’ feel jealous.

Here is asecret. despite the claim of ‘blue-blood’; aristocrats and royals have
the same ‘Red Liquid’ like you and me thatdo ‘curdle’ with fear and boil with
‘rage’ if situation demands.

During herlife-span of 120 days, this 7-micron wonder, weighing 25 picograms
‘Red-Riding-Hood’ workstirelessly delivering stuff; notwithstanding the
lockdown. Guaranteed to dotill our photo features on the obituary page.

‘How do you know RBC is a she?’ asked my son.

‘Hardworking, reliable and cute; like your mom’

My note- Broadminded readers can find the writer in the doctor. Readers having
cataract cannot see it. How nicely RBC isexplained and it is She

Q5 Can you tell a  Mysterious Fact(Weird)?

A5      CrystalRoss,23h

Cassius Marcellus Clay stood about 6'3'', tall andhandsome, commanding and
courageous.

By birth, he was a wealthy man from an influential Southernfamily who enslaved
people. But life took Cassius down a different path. As acollege student at
Yale in the late 1820s and early 1830s, he listened to speeches
fromabolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. They made an impression.

Cassius graduated college and returned home with anewfound mindset, calling
enslavement the "greatest evilthat ever cursed a nation."

"I am the avowed and uncompromising enemy ofslavery and shall never cease to
use all...means necessary to cause itsextinction," he said.

His loud voice for abolition brought him much vitriol inhis home state of
Kentucky. But more than just words, Cassius also dealt with attacks. In one
debate, a man shot atCassius. Cassius pulled out a knife he carried for
self-defense and, though hit, was able to fight off his attacker. Similar
incidents and duels happened multiple times.Yet, Cassius continued to be a
staunch advocate against enslavement.

Cassius woulddedicate his life to fighting for human rights and equality,
serving roles in theKentucky House of Representatives and as the U.S. Minister
to Russia. He passed away at the age of 92in 1903.
