I'm not using Sphinx in any popular sites, so I can't say for sure, but I 
wouldn't think there's any problems with using :extended match mode. Keep in 
mind, though, that it uses ANDs for implicit logic, instead of ORs - and so 
your users will find their standard searches work like :all instead of :any.
