They can do, depending on how extensive the anti-malware component is. Incidentally, just last week I took Comodo firewall (which I generally like quite a lot) off one machine (non-ThinkPad) because when I installed XP Service Pack 3, I started getting BSODs, and after analysis Comodo was the cause. (it is now running Online Armor, also an excellent program.) The reason I switched to Comodo from ZoneAlarm was that ZA was giving me BSODs on my W2K machines.
