Second the motion. I had a failure that pointed to bad RAM; called Crucial,
they cross-shipped without hesitation. It turned out to be a failing mobo, too
-- they never whined (but I felt guilty).

Wow! What a coincidence!

My longtime friend dropped off his Thinkcentre with me (808533U) because of
a bad smell followed by a dead computer. Well after spending $29 dollars to
a salvager for the replacement L-shaped supply (230W for a Pentium 4 3.2
processor based machine?, Come on IBM!: Christmas gift from this guy's
daughter, paid over $2000 in 2005 dollars, but that's another story), I was
immediately shocked to find this 'gem' with only 256mb DDR PC 3200 ram
(Samsung PC3200U CL3 IBM FRU 73P2683). Since I was working this for a quick
turnaround, I was off to the local chains: End result: PNY MD1024SD1-400
for $108 at Staples). Had a chance to get some EDGE memory for $79, but the
savings and time to get it was not 'worth' it. Also I think I maxxed out
this machine in spite of the 4 slot configuration (i.e. 2 gig is the stated
MB max).

OH and JIC: Best Buy had a chance to price match for a store that was less
than 2 miles away (they did not!, but again another story, i.e. they wanted
$64 each for the PNY stuff).

HTH.

I had a similar problem but I could afford to wait, so I went to
dealnews.com and signed up for an email alert on the memory I wanted,
and eventually found some for much less than Crucial wanted.

You can also cruise ebay but it is more difficult to know that you are
getting the right stuff.

Proof, once again, that the best buy is never at best buy... PNY is low end
memory, as well.

Looks like Newegg has the Crucial for $75, and Corsair for $45 or $50
(depending on grade) after rebate.

Thanks so much for the feeback. To that end could you elaborate, perhaps,
with a ranking (highest to lowest) of your (memory) 'recommendations, base
on distributor/manufacturer choices? I will then stash that away for
'future reference'.

My #1 choice for memory is Crucial. One messup so far in 9+ years of
ordering from them, and zero failures on the ram itself.

PNY seems to be half junk. I really try to steer friends away from them,
after the 4th or 5th problem with them.

Hello,

You might want to consider upgrading the ThinkCentre M51 8413 up to 4GB of
RAM. The Intel Pentium 4 540 CPU is a 64-bit (EMT64, in Intel-speak)
processor,
so if you were to go to a 64-bit version of Windows XP or Vista (or Linux or
other operating system) the CPU would be able to address all the memory.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky
