To continue yesterday's conversation, my copy of MaximumPC arrived today...
Some of you may want to pick up a copy at your supermarket magazine rack.

On Page 75, there is an article entitled,

Samsung 256 GB MLC SSD
Expensive but Worth It

The copyrighted article starts out with...

"Samsung's new 256GB SSD crushes the competition in capacity and write
speeds."

"Solid state drivdes show immense promise with regards to reliability and
read speeds, but current-generation models are rife with drawbacks. Due to
NAND flash memory's architecture, writing data to a block (after the first
time) requires copying th entire contents of that block to cache, erasing
it, and rewriting it with the added data. Large numers of small writes run
the risk of overloading the SSD's disk cache, causing high latency. Multi
Layer Cell (MLC) sold state drives, especially those utilizing JMicron's
JM602 controller, are particularly susceptible."

Then after five more paragraphs, ends with,

"Samsung doesn't currently plan to offer the 256 GB MLC SSD through normal
retail channels, but it's available on NewEgg and other aftermarket
retailers for $670, andas an OEM add-in in some Dell and Alienware
com;puters for $500-$700. Its read speeds are nearly on par with the X-25M,
its writes are much faster, and it has three times the capacity. If you've
got the scratch, this is one of the few SSDs currently out that we can
unreservedly recommend."

They also report that Intel has an X25 M drive with 80 GB, and Western
Digital VelociRaptor has a 300GB drive out.

I suspect things will now move very rapidly. After the Christmas rush, we
will see a lot of change, monthly, and a year from now more reasonable
prices.

Buy up those rotational drives from Seagate, Samsung, Western Digital,
Fujitsu, Toshiba, and Hitachi now because the world of laptop hard drives
has just changed drammatically...

Thi8s is the July 2009 issue that has "21 Instant PC UPGRADES" on the
cover... yellow and black.
