The Gripe Blog at Infoworld reports problems recently with Seagate which is surprising as I thought they were ok. One theory is the packaging isn't as good as it used to be and they get banged around in shipping.

Their desktop SATA drives have had many complaints because of a firmware issue. I often wonder to what extent desktop drive quality is a predictor of laptop drive quality and vice versa.

Almost every drive, laptop or desktop, that I've ever owned has failed at some point, occasionally in warranty. The best customer service I've had so far has been WD, who were unusually professional and accommodating.
