In our experience, all drive brands of 5400 rpm and 4200 rpm up to 80 GB
should work in the 600X.

Alternately, the IBM and Hitachi drives are practically identical in actual
use... and all 40 GB drives 5400 rpm will work. But they are not good
choices or models compared to Toshiba, Seagate, and Western Digital. I
would not waste time attempting to install a Samsung or a Fujitsu, though
they certainly should work as reliably as they do elsewhere. The IBM,
Hitachi, Samsung, and early Fujitsu are simply not as reliable or for as
long as Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital Scorpio.
.

You do not need that incremental backup, do you? If not, smash the drive
with a hammer to end any risk that it can be read elsewhere, and you are
done.

but living is the best thing they've come up with so far.
