A few days after posting the message below, I went ahead and installed
Windows 7 Ultimate on my X300.

I was getting set to follow up that it's working fine, when this
evening I got my first lockup. I went away for an hour and when I came
back, the notebook wouldn't come out of its sleep. Actually the screen
was blank and when I swiped my finger on the touchpad (or when I hit
the power button, sadly I didn't pay attention), I got a white arrow
cursor and then nothing. So perhaps it technically froze up as it was
coming out of screen saver/standby.

I have a few apps installed so I don't know whether this is the start
of ongoing problems again or if it's a one-shot (though like
cockroaches, I figure there's no such thing as _one_ lockup).

Had to do the 7-second thing with the power button and things seem
okay so far.
