yes, I've got usb 1-4 ports, and I've checked the HP onto each one. no printing.

in system:hardware:device mgr, I uninstalled all the USB drivers, lost my mouse
at that point, continued with the joystick, rebooted, windows found USB and
installed the drivers, mouse is back, and Device Mgr shows all the USC
controllers back in place.

still no printing.

I'm going back to Best Buy to return the usb-parallel cable, and buy a new USB
cable. The current USB cable works fine with Microtek 8700 scanner.

Ah, I see my Dymo label maker has the same type of USB cable (and Dymo prints
now and always has) but the dymo cable into the HP doesn't get print, so it's
not my scanner USB cable.

regedt32 still shows two USBPRINT items for Hewlett packard laserjet 1200

a wasted Sunday.

thanks
Len
