Any OS, by itself will actually be reasonably fast. It's the apps that are
slow.

I ran Gentoo Linux on my TP770 (233Mhz P1-MMX, 96MB Ram), because it allowed
me to build only what I needed. I ran a stripped-down window manager
(Fluxbox if I recall), did all file management from the command line (used
rox-filer if I really wanted a graphical file manager), did word processing
in LyX (because OpenOffice took more ram than I had, so had to load from
swap every time I clicked a menu), did as much web browsing as possible in
Links2 (has a graphical mode in addition to the text-only mode) and
Konqueror for sites that didn't work (Opera was heavier).

Ask me off-list if you want help building such a configuration.
