The switch would make sense as a culprit if the machine was moved in any way, 
but I have yet to see a switch turning itself on and off without anything being 
touched, after a certain period of time...

On my T41, closing the lid switch turns off both the LCD and the external 
monitor....so, I would think this symptom would not rule out a lid switch 
problem.

off on the LCD *and* the external monitor, whether they're running in tandem or 
separately. So it couldn't be the LCD, and if it were in the cable I don't

it would affect the external monitor.
