I'm going to posit this: The modem establishes itself as a com port... by plugging it into a different USB port it grabs a different COM port address/number. This prevents it from working properly with your software.
I used to see something along these lines with USB to Serial adapters -- the adapter would self-assign a different COM port number depending on the USB port used. Didn't always happen, but certain models exhibited this behavior. -Jonathan On Sun, Aug 21, 2011 at 4:39 PM, David Ross <[email protected]> wrote: > Possibly your modem is drawing at close to (or above) the 500ma limit, and > only the lower port (which I think is closer to the motherboard) can supply > enough juice. > > > ------------------------------**-------------------- > > From: "Jeffrey Race" <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, August 21, 2011 4:02 AM > To: <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [Thinkpad] USB cellular modem on T43 issue > > > Works normally when I insert a thumb drive, or a >> printer, which is all I previously used it for. >> This is my first experience with its use for a >> modem >> Jeffrey Race >> >> --Original Message Text--- >> From: [email protected] >> Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2011 08:19:53 -0400 (EDT) >> >> It is not normal. >> >> How does the upper port behave when you insert a different USB device? >> cheers, George >> >> >> -----Original Message----- >> From: Jeffrey Race <[email protected]> >> To: Thinkpad Users Group <[email protected]> >> Sent: Sun, Aug 21, 2011 7:58 am >> Subject: [Thinkpad] USB cellular modem on T43 issue >> >> >> >> >> My Huawei E160 modem is recognized only >> >> when inserted into the lower USB >> >> socket on my T43 running WXP SP3, not >> >> the upper socket.
