Yup, I wound up putting in a service call, and my laptop is currently
enjoying a week at at Lenovo's repair depot. Fun, fun, fun.
While that might be "the best they can do for you", I think it's
important to pass on the message, that there's no excuse for you to go
through this ordeal!

The unit is back in town, awaiting delivery to me on Monday. Apparently they
replaced the motherboard, so I guess Secure Boot wouldn't even let them boot
from their rescue media to re-flash it, and apparently even Lenovo doesn't have
a backdoor into the BIOS. I know the first thing I'll be doing when I get it
back is disabling Secure Boot!
