The problem with the retina display is the software that drives it. Especially for video, the CPU usage is horrendous. They upscale the video (in software) to double the video resolution, then downscale that to the screen resolution (not sure if that's done on the GPU, as the overlay surface may be too big for some GPUs). The memory bandwidth involved in that leaves little for actual processing to happen.
