According to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R30, your R30 uses a Trident display card. Those are pretty rare nowadays, so maybe it's not auto-detected. In that case, maybe you need to create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf which just contains: Section "Device" Identifier "My sweet R30's video card" Driver "trident" EndSection > 3.
