As a checkpoint, or an alternative, you might try Ubuntu. Debian has gotten better over the years but their basic philosophy I think has trapped them into generally being a brutal install. If you want most of the Debian way of life, but an [usually] easier install, try Ubuntu or Mint. Ubuntu is based on Debian and Mint on Ubuntu.

While my experience is only anecdotal, I've found Ubuntu usually installs on laptops easier than Debian. If nothing else, it might give you some good config files to save off and use on a straight Debian install.

An R30 is a bit old, so you might consider XUbuntu, or even Lubuntu which are different Ubuntu distros with lighter weight desktops than the default Unity with Ubuntu.

Ubuntu also has a very active user forum for installation issues, etc.

Anyone have Debian on an R30?
I'm trying Linux for the first time and am not at all happy with the
installation.
1. Can't get full screen
2. Can't change resolution to more than 800x600
3. Mouse or Trackpoint irritating to use.
