I recommend 7-zip. It's FREE, open source software, available for 
Windows, Linux, UNIX, and it supports all the Windows AND UNIX 
compression formats.

For personal use, I create 7-zip files because the compression is better 
than .zip, .rar, .tar, etc. You also the advantage of creating 7-zip 
files for your own use, which are more compressed than other formats.
