I don't completely understand the response.

I understand that if Thunderbird and the web server have an SSL
connection, the Webmail extension can see the traffic as it would be
encrypted.

But can't the Webmail extension have its own SS connection to the web
server?

In fact, if a GMail account is configured always to use SSL, I assume
that the Webmail extension will use SSL (https).  A perusal of my
GMail logs suggests that the extension starts with http but shifts to
https, presumably due to responses from the web server.

In my browser, I can go straight to https://www.gmail.com/ if I like.
I was just wondering if one could somehow tell the Webmail extension
to start with https.  Of course, it wouldn't make sense to do that if
the web server didn't support https.

I don't understand the reference to an SSL proxy.
