I had a problem with my email.com account, until logged into the AOL
homepage (http://www.aol.com/), clicked on the "Mail" icon, logged in,
and then responded to the "capthca" challenge.

The mail.com page doesn't do captcha, but the AOL add-on uses the
aol.com front-end, which does. Until you've resolve the capthca, the
AOLmail add-on will not function properly.
