I'm actually using IMAP with my free yahoo account. imap.mail.yahoo.com port 993, SSL/TSL, Normal Password.
You still have to use the Webmail add on for tbird found here http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/files Turn on the IMAP server and it should work and check mail at startup and every minute if you want it to. I'm using tbird 3.1.9. If you don't use this add-on it will only sync the folders when you startup tbird or manually sync them.
