The RandomTiddler plugin was inspired by the original Random plugin:

Using it became frustrating, because it didn't do all the things I
wanted it to. I tried tweaking it, and then wound up re-writing the
thing. But this pointed me in the right direction.
I originally wasn't thinking about language or flashcards at all. I
love randomness, and one of the MediaWiki features I love is the
Random Article function. While working on this plugin, I started
thinking about a way to implement spoiler text in TW. I'd also started
studying Esperanto, and my mind made the connection with flashcards.
