OK, I'll recap:

I removed the vnc section from xorg.conf and rebooted remote system  and 
started x0vncserver. In a separte shell on local I run vncviewer the 
remote shell shows the following output

This gets me the blank desktop I described . Worse it seems to be in 
some sort of loop showing the tiger window within a window within a 
window.....

This is luckily slow enough to do a few f8 commands and get out cleanly.


So x0vncviewer IS showing the black 1024 x 768 desktop not the true :0

What is wrong with this invocation?
