OK, I'll recap: I removed the vnc section from xorg.conf and rebooted remote system and started x0vncserver. In a separte shell on local I run vncviewer the remote shell shows the following output local# ssh -C -X -L 5902:buntybox:5902 remote.dyndns.info remote # x0vncserver -PasswordFile=/root/.vnc/passwd Sat Feb 27 10:15:15 2010 Geometry: Desktop geometry is set to 1024x768+0+0 Sat Feb 27 10:15:16 2010 Main: XTest extension present - version 2.2 Main: Listening on port 5900 [here's where I start the viewer] Sat Feb 27 10:17:02 2010 Connections: accepted: 90.0.188.36::59072 SConnection: Client needs protocol version 3.8 SConnection: Client requests security type VncAuth(2) Sat Feb 27 10:17:11 2010 Main: Enabling 8 buttons of X pointer device Sat Feb 27 10:17:20 2010 Main: Allocated basic Xlib image VNCSConnST: Server default pixel format depth 24 (32bpp) little-endian rgb888 Sat Feb 27 10:17:23 2010 VNCSConnST: Client pixel format depth 24 (32bpp) little-endian rgb888 Sat Feb 27 10:17:45 2010 Connections: closed: 90.0.188.36::59072 (Clean disconnection) SMsgWriter: framebuffer updates 3 SMsgWriter: Tight rects 22, bytes 13639 SMsgWriter: raw bytes equivalent 3357960, compression ratio 246.202801 ^C Sat Feb 27 10:20:59 2010 Main: Terminated This gets me the blank desktop I described . Worse it seems to be in some sort of loop showing the tiger window within a window within a window..... This is luckily slow enough to do a few f8 commands and get out cleanly. So x0vncviewer IS showing the black 1024 x 768 desktop not the true :0 What is wrong with this invocation?
