I guess it depends on what kind of user base you have, but the number of
browsers with java enabled seems to be drop every day. It could be argued
that Java applets are legacy; are you sure you want to build new systems
based on that technology? (I don't have any numbers though, if anyone
have, please share them.)
As Arthur Huillet pointed out, we do provide similar portal-style
functionality in ThinLinc. Currently, it is possible to use either a Java
Applet, or the native client. In the latter case, we are dynamically
generating a .thinlinc connection file. Our plan is to phase out the Java
Applet and instead provide a HTML5 client.
