For one thing they are too heavy for a mast (think about a mast you can carry alone in 3000m height and deep snow), for another the whole thing would be taken apart by the wind in the first thunderstorm. You don't drill into permafrost. Not unless you really have to. If you are lucky and you have just frozen soil, you only have to deal with something that has the mechanical properties of steal. If you are unlucky and you are on a rock, you've to drill into granite with small pockets of ice.
