The web page mentions changing the ulimits before invoking ntpd whereas Andy said the kernel is running out of memory. These are unrelated and would have very little to do with each other. I think the fact that the kernel is killing ntp is just a symptom of the problem, some other process is making it go into an out of memory situation and ntp is incorrectly reaped. If the kernel was killing off the correct process then the box would revert to a stable state after it ran out of memory.
