Hi Scott,

Yes, it depends on which server you're paired with currently.

In the 'ntpq -pn' output, the server with the asterisk (*) next to it is the
one the server is currently synced to, the current system peer. A stratum
one server is one that is currently synced to a local reference clock. A
stratum two is one that is currently synced to a stratum one server. A
stratum three is one that is synced to a stratum two, and so on.

Ref clock. (Stratum zero)
  |
   - Stratum one
       |
        - Stratum two
            |
             - Stratum three
                 |
                  - Stratum four
                      |
                       - etc.

In your case, your server is a stratum two server as long as it is currently
synced to the stratum ones you have in your ntp.conf. However, if your
server decides to sync to the stratum four, it will then be a stratum five.

Hope that helps.

Dennis
