Hi all,

Verizon just finished wiring my apartment for FiOS. Like any good geek I
started poking around the router's settings, and I noticed that out of the
box, the router/wireless AP they provided (a Westell 9100EM) is set up to
use pool.ntp.org. It doesn't appear to have any provision for providing NTP
service for my LAN, so I can only assume that the NTP service is just for
keeping the log timestamps accurate.

It appears to run embedded Linux, so there's a chance it's running a sane
client that follows the proper rules of engagement. But my understanding (as
someone with a few boxes in the pool) was that if you're selling
software/devices that use the pool out of the box, you were supposed to
arrange for a vendor-specific CNAME and perhaps add a few servers of your
own to the pool.

Am I correct in thinking that Verizon (or perhaps Westell, but ultimately,
Verizon) is doing something wrong? I don't want to contact them without
verifying that they are, indeed, doing something they're not supposed to
here. Has Verizon already made arrangements to do what they're doing? Is
this list the appropriate venue for me to be discussing this?

Thanks in advance for the advice.
