Keep in mind, some of are running tinc on relatively resource-limited systems. On routers and other embedded systems, shaving off a few kb really matters. The Linksys WRT54GL, a popular platform for Linux-based routers, has 4MB flash for example. An extra 200-300kb for ncurses can mean the difference between an image that can run tinc, and one that doesn't have enough space to include it.
