I am not the specialist of Linux but what I have understand is: HOME: user related file storage for document, configuration file, all what can be different from one user to another.
BIN: Linux core files (remains the same, only update from time to time). USR: Location of your programs VAR: Location of the data of the programs (in OpenERP case, would be filestore). HOME and VAR are the folders that usually need regular backup (dayly, depend on how critical is your business). If your server is dedicated to OpenERP, you need regular backup of databases (pg_dump) and of filestore folder (through files system). ------------------------ You will get great enjoyment out of overcoming your difficulties.
