This was our idea from the very beginning, but it is how it is. Nevertheless this architecture brings some benefits.
Anyway we have not experienced big trouble performing maintenance, sometimes even not informing users, if downtime is not very long lasting. Another idea is to prevent users (except administrators) doing any actions for the maintenance period. This could be developed as a module, so implementer could decide if he wants to execute such policy, and which user groups should be held out while doing any maintenance.
