All nodes in a system share one radio frequency/channel, so only one message can be "on the air" at a time. The MAC protocol attempts to prevent two nodes from transmitting at the same time, but if it fails the received result is usually garbage so sometimes messages are dropped due to interference. This holds for all types of motes using TOS.
