Of course everyone is entitled to his or her opinion about the existence of DID; however, I encourage those in doubt to research the topic. There are some top notch researchers in the area of DID: Bessle Van der Kolk, Frank Putnam, and Constance Dalenberg for starters.
If presented with a student who claimed to be DID, I *would not* make a joke of it by pointing them to the nearest acting class. I would ask if they were stable enough so that one personality would be present at all times during class and during exams. I might also ask if the student was intergrated enough so that their disorder would not present a problem for learning the material in class AND at test time (a time when another personality is likely to come out). If in fact the student actually has a dx of DID, they have already been through enough trauma. They certainly do not deserve ridicule from their professors.
