Hi everyone:

I believe that DID would be covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. You
would need to have documented evidence that the student was actually diagnosed with
DID and then you would need to make reasonable accomodations for that particular
disability. Of course, I'm assuming that the student is stable enough to attend
class. If he or she were not stable enough to attend class, then perhaps they should
consider taking a leave of absence until they are more stabilized.

On a lighter note, it is hard enough for me to get to know the names of my students
each semester. I can't imagine what it would be like if I had a class full of
students with DID. That also brings a whole other side to our recent attendance
discussions...

Of course everyone is entitled to his or her opinion about the existence of DID;
however, I encourage those in doubt to research the topic. There are some top notch
researchers in the area of DID: Bessle Van der Kolk, Frank Putnam, and Constance
Dalenberg for starters.

If presented with a student who claimed to be DID, I *would not* make a joke of it by
pointing them to the nearest acting class. I would ask if they were stable enough so
that one personality would be present at all times during class and during exams. I
might also ask if the student was intergrated enough so that their disorder would not
present a problem for learning the material in class AND at test time (a time when
another personality is likely to come out).

If in fact the student actually has a dx of DID, they have already been through enough
trauma. They certainly do not deserve ridicule from their professors.
