Ha! That's nothing! I challenge anyone to top this one. Our first year students are required to sit four multiple choice research methods tests throughout the semester. These tests take place in their lab/tute classes. If they miss a test they have to register their details with me, and they can take a make-up test at the end of semester. I ask them to write down their details on a record sheet, including a reason for why they missed the test.
In between the medical certificates and family crises was this (and I am writing it out verbatim): "Friend leaving for army in City. On train in the morning had an incident with aggressive transvestite". I looked at the student; she looked at me. She wasn't laughing... My guess is that this is the same person who wrote on the course evaluation, "If you like to read, take this course, but if you hate reading, don't take this class."
