For
about 10 years Fred Roger and I lived on the same street--about a block
away. We would see each other on the street occasionally and chat about
things. Two of my students worked at his favorite restaurant and always
had a Mr. Rogers story. I have some of my own. And he was our
commencement speaker last spring, where he arrived on a trolley that picked him
up at his house. About 20 seniors went along for the ride.
His talk was one of the few addresses I have heard that I will
remember. I have heard a lot of commencement
addresses. Although I didn't agree with some of his views of
contemporary psychology, I had nothing but the greatest respect for him.
He was the real thing.
