Ok, I have to share this one, because it simply cracked me up!

My policy regarding extending the deadline for apaper is basically: it won't happen, unless you die or you have to give birth. So, this is exactly what happened this term. One of my students was soon to go into labor, and she asked for an extension, which, of course, I happilly gave her.

then today, another student comes by, and asks for one, saying he had a very serious reason. I don't ask my students t ogove me their reasons. After all, who am I to judge, right? So I told him that unless he was expecting a baby, or had to go back home for an emergency (he's from Germany), he would have to take the small "late" penalty (I'm easy there... only 1% per day). He said his reason was much better that giving birth. So he intrigued me. I asked him if there was a problem at home, or something like that. He said no.

Here's what happened: 2 days ago, him and his friend were driving downtown. A police car passed by, and his friend flashed a plastic gun at the officers... Well, you can imagine the rest! My student had to spend the night in jail. He seems to clearly remember the shotgun being pointed to his face (good way to create a flashbulb memory, ain't it?) So I told him that I could not give his his 2 day extension, but that I hope his friend had learned a good lesson out of this! He did not argue.

Only in the Yukon!!!

I love to see my students get through the end of the term. This is when you really get to see them for who and where they are. I admire their courrage to make it all the way through. I love seeing them face the challenges, and get over them. This is great! I truly admire them for who they are... and I love the good stories they bring me!

Cheers!

JM
