I understand your frustration and I hope you will stick with the list through the discussion of this issue. TIPS is a wonderful forum for an exchange of ideas related to teaching and psychology. I truly value the professional relationships that I have developed over the years as a result of this forum. Some of these relationships have resulted in joint publications and convention/conference presentations over the years. You would be hard pressed to find a better group of individuals.
However, TIPS is a forum that like other groups has a history. And this history can weigh heavy at times when the same issues/problems repeatedly pop up and appear to be resistant to change. For example, one of the last posts by Michael included a statement that could be interpreted as anti-Semitic. In and of itself, I can see why someone might not react to the message. However, as has been written and documented via the archives (I can send you copies of these posts concerning this issue if you would like a little background information), the comment fits a long history of anti-Semitic statements. Thus, when people respond it is not just in relation to recent events but also to the history of behavior. To someone new to the list, it might seem out of proportion to the current event. And this is but one example.
So please bear with the discussion and I hope it reaches a resolution soon.
Note that in addition to TIPS there are two other active lists that one can join that may be of interest to you. They fulfill different needs so I'm not recommending them as a replacement to TIPS. The first is CommColl - CommColl is an electronic discussion list for faculty at two-year institutions. To subscribe send a message saying "SUBSCRIBE COMMCOLL your name" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
The second is PsychTeacher - PsychTeacher is a moderated electronic discussion list for high school and college/university teachers of psychology. It is the listserv sponsored by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2, APA). To subscribe send a message saying "SUBSCRIBE PYSCHTEACHER your name" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
TIPS is very much like the teacher's lounge and as such it has a level of warmth not found on most moderated listservs. However, it also means that at times, the mailbox can fill up with posts that may appear tangential to the list's primary mandate.
Best wishes,
Linda

I'm not exactly an outsider, I teach in the psychology department at a
community college, but I am a fairly new instructor and have only
subscribed to this list for a few months. My reaction to this banter
about Sylvester is to consider dropping the list.
