Hot as in 'sexy.'  I have been known to tease colleagues who have been awarded the hot pepper.  One of my junior colleagues got the pepper and also a number of comments from his female graduate students like "he is so hot, especially when he is wearing his laboratory coat."  A bit later one of his (male, probably) graduate students wrote something like "the women in this class have an unhealthy interest in the professor."
 
Several of my intro students once wrote "don't buy the book, you don't need it, just read the online lecture notes."  I gave an open-book final exam that semester.  <evil grin>
