I love the way TIPS challenges me to do a bit of research when I'm not certain. It turns out that the Queen ceased to be the Head of State in South Africa in 1961, when the post was taken over by the Staatspresident.
See http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/President-of-South-Africa
and http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/State-President-of-South-Africa

During Verwoerd's term as Prime Minister, the South African Head of State was the Queen until 1961, and Charles Robberts Swart thereafter (until 1967, the after Verwoerd retired).

Hmm, if I were a grade 8 student (that's Canadian for 8th grader) back in 1959 in a social studies "bee" and I answered one of the following to the question: "Who is the head of state of South Africa"
a. Hendrik F. Verwoerd
b. Queen Elizabeth II

Which answer would get me the prize? Seems that "b" would be a pretty easy answer for lots of questions. What would have been the answer if the "state" was Canada?

I would bet that the Prime Minister of South Africa under the apartheid constitution was not the Head of State (which was the trivia question posed) but only the Head of Government. Someone known as the Queen would have been the South African Head of State in the late-50s and early '60s, no?
