The latest NEWSWEEK poll shows that 91 percent of American adults
surveyed believe in God—and nearly half reject the theory of evolution."

It is perfectly possible to deeply respect the belief in God, and to
challenge the refusal to accept the truth of evolution. It would be wrong to
challenge
the belief in God, since such things are not done based on evidence. Evidence
is abundant for evolution, and the student's refusal to accept that shows
recalcitrance, lack of maturity and failure to think critically. As college
professors we are paid to help them grow intellectually and think critically,
not
selectively accept the knowledge that pleases them.

If students insist that accepting evolution means rejecting God, it is also a
failure of intellect on their part. The Catholic Church accepts evolution as
real.
