A few years ago I received a call from a genleman in the Middle East who wanted
to know why his son received a C in my class. What really had happened is that I
had two students in that class with similar last Arabic names-both last names
started with "Al" (I am omitting the full last names re privacy concerns) and
their first names also began with the same initials.I mistakenly gave the wrong
grades to both of those students. The genlleman's should have received a B and
the other should have received a C. I did effectuate a grade change from C to
B,but not from B to C.
Have any of you tipsters encountered such issues? I would imagine those names
that contain Mac,Mc could pose an issue, and so do Hispanics who at times use
multiple names.
