Not particularly fruitful but I can contribute the one lonely and
neglected paper in my file. It's Stanton (1994), and its reference
list, at least, might provide access to the older literature on the
topic.
Citing a paper allows me to relate some hearsay. I understand that
some performers have experimented with the class of drugs known as
"beta-blockers" to take the edge off their nervousness, while others
claim that it instead takes the edge off their performance (prefering
barfing to blunting, I suppose). I myself suffered from "listener
anxiety" in the days when my daughter used to perform in music
competitions. Beta-blockers sounded like a good idea, but for me, not
my daughter.
