I use the Smither text and today we covered the chapter about groups.  Here
is an exercise I made up that was met with actual enthusiasm and good
response:

 Create a diagram of the sociometry of a baseball team.  You may work with
other groups but each group must produce a diagram.  Label each baseball
player in the diagram by the position they play.  Briefly explain the diagram.

FYI, on page 313 of the text there is an example of such a diagram with
cliques, pairs, loners, stars, etc. identified.  

One of my students is a pitcher on the baseball team, a fact which the rest
of the class didn't know until today.  He had a great time helping the
other groups with the assignment.  I followed up with a question about the
role of subject matter experts in groups.  Erica
