You are right, the student needs to rename her research hypothesis the "null"
and her alternative hypothesis is what she is calling her research hypothesis
- ie, there is a difference.
Strictly speaking, the study she is doing is not a true experiment as she has
no ability to manipulate the assigned sex of her subjects. It falls into the
realm of the quasi-experimental.
