I didn't even know there was a 3rd edition of Heiman -- I've been using the Second for about 10 years. I suppose I should check!
I hope that it doesn't go out of print -- I think it's clear and covers almost everything I want (I have 6 contact hours a week for a year, so I can do a lot with them). My only complaint is that it is from the last generation of stats books, and still has computational formulae in it. I wish it didn't -- spreadsheets are more common than calculators, and the definitional formulae are easy enough to do with a spreadsheet -- and those make sense. I'll take a look at the Davis and Smith text as well as the other two. m -- Marc Carter, PhD Associate Professor and Chair Department of Psychology College of Arts & Sciences Baker University -- ________________________________ From: Paul C Bernhardt [mailto:pcbernha...@frostburg.edu] Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 12:52 PM To: Teaching in the Psychological Sciences (TIPS) Subject: Re: [tips] Jackson or Furlong, Lovelace, & Lovelace I think the Heiman combined Methods/Stats book (the white one in its 3rd edition) is going out of print. So, it is probably not a good choice, even though we used it with success for many years. Davis and Smith, An introduction to Research Methods and Statistics may be one to look at, also. If you are doing a single semester course, IMO, none of these books can get you there. The information density is too high. If you are doing a 2 semester sequence, and are willing to require the same book for both courses, and providing that your course descriptions don't get in the way of what you can present splitting the contents of the books, I think any of them would be effective.
