Hi Karl- None of these factors would change my response. I guess it depends on how you see your role; either as an arbiter (assigning grades) or as a guide/mentor. If the former then there is no need to pre-read papers. If the latter then working with the students to help them improve their work can be a valuable experience. If the latter approach is too time consuming then you have the option of altering the assignments so that the interactions with the students become more manageable. I don't have any data that would suggest that one approach is superior to the other, but I do know that I enjoyed working with students one-on-one a lot more than I "enjoyed" handing out grades.
